IRS Form 8949 + Schedule D, German Anlage SO, French Form 2086, Brazilian DARF/DAA, UK SA108. CSV, PDF, TurboTax TXF (exports require PRO).

How It Works

1

Import

Connect 29 exchanges (Coinbase, Binance, Kraken) and 22 blockchains. CSV upload also supported. No API keys required for read-only.

2

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the dTax crypto tax calculator really free?

Yes — the free tier supports unlimited transactions, all 29 exchanges, and FIFO / Specific ID calculation with a gain/loss summary; country-specific methods, full Form 8949 line-item detail and PDF, TXF and CSV exports require PRO. No credit card required. The tax engine is open source under AGPL-3.0, so anyone can fork and self-host it.

Which cost-basis methods does the calculator support?

FIFO (first in, first out — IRS default), LIFO, HIFO (highest in, first out — minimizes short-term gains), Specific Identification, ACB (adjusted cost base — Canada), PMPA (mandatory in France), and weighted average (mandatory in Brazil and Germany). The engine auto-applies the correct method for your jurisdiction.

How does it handle DeFi, staking, NFTs, and airdrops?

DeFi swaps are treated as taxable disposal events at fair-market value. Staking rewards are ordinary income at fair-market value when received, and the cost basis carries forward. NFTs use the same capital-gains framework. Airdrops are ordinary income at receipt. Country-specific overrides apply (e.g., Germany's 1-year holding rule).

Can I self-host it?

The open-source engine and CLI are at github.com/dTaxLab/dtax (AGPL-3.0) and run on any VPS or your local machine; your transaction history stays on your server. The full web application and API are proprietary; self-hosting them is arranged per installation. The hosted version on getdtax.com also has a free tier.

How accurate is the calculator?

The cost-basis engine has 984+ automated tests covering all supported jurisdictions and edge cases (chain reorgs, hard forks, wash sales, like-kind exchanges). For audits, every gain links back to source transactions with full audit trail. We are open about known limitations — see our docs.

What's the difference vs Koinly, CoinTracker, CoinLedger?

dTax is open source (they're proprietary), free for unlimited transactions on the hosted tier (they cap at ~50-1000 transactions on free), and the engine is self-hostable (they're SaaS-only). We focus on transparency: you can audit our cost-basis math by reading the code on GitHub.
